Happy New Year 2020
Up close with Titanium Fireworks
You can plan for a lot of things in photography, but the weather is always outside all of our control.
After being front and centre last year, I jumped at the opportunity to come back. Again, I am deeply grateful to Titanium Fireworks for giving me the opportunity to be up close and personal for the show.
But due to unforeseen weather conditions, up close turned into engulfed.
Midnight, and not a breath of wind
Just as Big Ben struck midnight and the crowd cheered and fireworks lit up the sky, the air changed. It became incredibly still. Not even the slightest breeze came up the Thames.
Usually I would welcome a still evening in the city, but for fireworks lovers this was not to be the case. Without any air movement, the smoke from the 12,000 explosions had nothing to take it away. Soon the cloud grew and crept eerily across the Thames, like the mist from a Stephen King novel.
A couple of minutes into the show I was engulfed in smoke, and sadly the display was obscured from view for all the thousands of visitors who had travelled into the city.
Lost in the smoke
It was incredibly unfortunate, as I know just how much hard work, coordination and dedication the team at Titanium Fireworks put into putting on a good show. It did, however, make for some interesting photographs.
Let’s hope the weather holds out for next year.
